Drag Wednesday: Bye bye brows…

So Drag Wednesday has rolled around once more and since our Marty focused on eyeliner last week, I decided to tackle the eyebrows this week.

No matter what look you’re going for, in drag or out, a good set of eyebrows are vital to frame the gorgeous eye look you’ve created. You wouldn’t stick a Picasso to the wall with push tacks, would you? NO! So we need to create a frame to suit. With drag, a lot of queens go for a very hyper-feminine arch or opt for a thin brow. So some prep is necessary to be able to get that new and improved feminine brow. Here are just a few options which I’ve tested out:

  • Tape – It’s possible to get an arch simply by using tape to lift the arch of the brow. This works best with men who have quite orderly brows and womens brows. The drawback comes with covering up the tape in question so I have a tendency to avoid.
  • Shaving/Waxing – This one all depends on how comfortable you are with half to no eyebrows whilst not wearing make-up/being out of drag. I personally already shave off the outer half (maybe 3/4) of my brow so I can extend my arch and have a more exaggerated brow shape and it really was a life altering experience (thank you wine)  because doing my brows has become so much easier. You could go the full whack and shave your eyebrows off completely but I’d take a serious think before jumping in. Are you prepared to draw your brows in every day or will you feel comfortable enough to go completely browless on days where make-up isn’t an option or you’re under a time constraint.
  • Blocking – The most opted for choice of queens, make-up artists and cosplayers the world over, is blocking. Which is simply just covering the brow. Sounds simple enough but I’ve had enough mishaps to know that you need to do it right for it to work. The upside of taking the time to block though, is you’re left with your own natural eyebrow hidden underneath so that you can just wash it right off when you’re done and are as good as new. Here’s a simple step by step on blocking…

What you’ll need:

Cleansing water, a spoolie (or two), glue stick (preferably Elmer’s purple glue stick), pressed or loose powder (I’m using baby powder for this tutorial), metal spatula (or the closed end of a set of tweezers will do in a pinch), foundation.

Step 1: Cleanse the eyebrow area, ensuring that there’s no product or any facial oils remaining. Take a spoolie and brush your eyebrows, finishing with a downwards stroke.

Step 2: Take your glue stick (Elmer’s purple glue is the best to use but I’m working with Pritt Stick at the moment) and rub it along the eyebrow, first against the grain, then with the grain so every hair is coated. I only have the first 1/3 of my eyebrow so you would just do it over the whole brow or however much you’re wanting to cover up.

Step 3: Take an eyebrow comb or a spoolie and brush the hairs firmly in the direction you want them to go, flattening them to the skin. Allow the glue to dry.brows2

Step 4: Use loose or pressed powder (I prefer baby powder myself) to set over the area which we’ve just glued down. At this point you should have a good amount of coverage from the powder alone.

Step 5: Take your metal spatula and scoop a small amount of glue onto the tip. Use the spatula to press the glue along your eyebrow, ensuring that the area is completely smoothed. You want to cover up the texture of the eyebrow but you don’t want to leave an obvious line where the glue is. Allow to dry and repeat step 4.

brows4Step 6: Cover with foundation and set with powder.

It’s really not difficult once you get the hang of the smoothing and timing the drying of your glue. It’s a worthwhile technique to master as it can be incorporated into everyday makeup, face painting, special effects etc.

So now that you’ve got no brows, go forth and be creative with your eye make-up. I’ll be back next week with some handy tips and products for drawing your brows back on again!!

Be bold. Be brash. Be you.

Top 10 Rupauls Allstar Queens : The Queen sized edition!

So Rupauls Allstars season 2 is well and truly underway so we taken a moment to rank our queens from ten to one! Based on challenges, overall style and looks. We are reading these Queens and word of warning,  a spoiler alert is in action!

#10 Coco Montrese

Yes her look is less orange and is much more visually pleasing, but that first challenge to showcase talent – fail. The overall look was a no no for me.

#9 Adore Delano

Everyone had high hopes for this fan favourite with a stellar singing career outside of the contest. However the pressure got too much for her and I feel she gave up too quickly before she even gave herself a chance.

#8 Ginger Minj

This comedy queen came to play. Funny from the outset and in challenges. Looks wise was a bit of a let down when compared to other queens. A queen we expected far more from.

#7 Roxxxy Andrews

With a change of attitude (whether playing a game or not) but not much else, we are seeing Roxxxy fall middle to bottom of the pile, despite winning the first lip sync. She is providing us will a big ol’ meh, and yet e expected more from this fiesty woman. Can this thick and juicy girl pull it back. She did in season 5, can she repeat this?

#6 Phi Phi O’hara

The bitch is back! Whether it be editing or not girl, we are not here to slate her. Gaining momentum in the challenges and with killer looks on the runway this is certainly a fierce queen. However will she be remember for slaying bitchin’ or slaying the runway?

#5 Katya

Crazy Katya is our middle of the road queen. Although amazing as Bjork in the snatch game the rest of he runways and challenge have been a little too bland and meh. Can this fan favourite rise to the top?

#4 Detox       wp-1474540827393.jpg

With hilarious performances, iconic lip syncs and fashion worthy runways, Detox is hitting it. However the reason she does not hit our top 3 is the same reason as season 5. We feel she is not pushing it enough, and we  we always want more from this beautifully talented silicone wonder.

Yes! After the last elimination we would love to see Tatianna, Alyssa and Alaska in top 3!

Tatianna felt she had more to show and has grown most from her season. Repping the older seasons, we feel this queen deserves to go all the way to the final 3.  Alyssa Edwards seems to understand her stardom and comedy. Applied with a face of beauty,  we salute her. Alaska has always been a force to be reckoned with. Hilarious and devilishly devastating can this queen take the crown?

We’ve ranked them, now it is your turn! Do you agree with our pecking order? Let us know your thoughts! Now slay queens SLAAAY!

Marsicans – Absence EP

Sometimes fate brings a band to your attention for a reason. I feel this happened with Leeds quartet Marsicans.

The Absence EP (Deluxe Edition) was released earlier this month and is filled with dreamy indie pop goodness. 8 tracks including 2 remixes, and ending with a soothing string quartet version of the harmonious song Far Away. This whole EP bleeds a summer that we didn’t have, with opening track Absence transcending you to the middle of nowhere, cruising around with wind flowing through your locks. That is a  constant feeling throughout this EP.  Far Away eclipsed the other songs for me. The summery riffs, crashing drums, and the perfect harmonies lingered with me for hours after listening. Even the string quartet version  left tingles on my arms, taking the song to a different dimension.  The remixes by Pixel Fix and Will Featherby,  also took tracks Arms of Another and Swimming to another place, and shows just how good the original tracks are.

The Marsicans are out on a huge tour this September and we recommend you catch them. They are an astonishing band we highly tip over the next few months. Get The Absence EP now.

Drag Wednesdays : The Eyes Have It!

Drag Wednesday comes round yet again and this week i will be focusing on my novice ways of drag, more specifically the eyes and eyeliner!

I do love a good eyeliner design as it has the power to make your eyes pop! Whether it be a simple wing or a glorious creation with multitudes of colours. My go to is a simple wing. Murder to get even, But worth it!

An example of a simple wing is in the picture above on my very own peepholes! Simple and efficient. No nonsense makeup for your day to day life, yet stil turns heads. Some of my inspiration comes from queens such as Trixie Mattel with her shocking wings, to Raven who has  a bold yet demure eye. Looks I will be most definitely trying out soon. Do you have a favourite style or colour? Please share it with us here with the team at Bubble POP Shock! Remember and stay creative!

So we are gracing you with a few of our favourite memes to help you conquer those Monday blues.. Remember, be bold, be brash, be you

10 Reasons to Love… Regular Show

It was announced this week that Cartoon Network will be ending The Regular Show afterdownload-3 their current 8th season. The wacked up kids cartoon is a firm favourite amongst kids (and adults), and those who love the likes of Adventure Time and Amazing World of Gumball, also tune in to see Mordecai, Rigby and their odd posse on their bizarre adventures.  We thought we would look at 10 reasons at why this CN show will be one of your favourites in no time, and why we are all very said to see it come to and end.

It’s 11 minutes of bat shit insanity

Yes each episode has some form of a story line, however they are so out of this world you kind of question if there was any point. From random quips to then belting on 80’s classics, your mind becomes an explosion of  happiness and joy.

Skips is the big brother you secretly want

download-1Tough yeti Skips is always looking out for Rigby and Mordecai. In fact, he literally looks out for everyone in the show. From suffering heart ache, our beloved Skips is immortal. From going all mortal combat in fight scenes to being a good friend, we all want a Skips in our lives.

It’s Mighty Boosh for kids

Bare with me on this one. I understand it’s a fucking bold statement. Yes there are some innuendos for us so called grown ups, but it is targeted for kids. And for lovers of the good old Mighty Boosh, it’s worth the viewing pleasure. Random. Insane. Song and dance. As well as some strong looks. It’s the cartoon embodiment of The Boosh.

imagesIt mirrors our everyday life

Yes, even an out if this world show has some reality in it. The leads Mordecai and Rigby are constantly hooked to a gaming console, they are always eating crap and chucking sassy, bitchy quotes. Sums many of us up well. Haters gonna hate.

You cannot hate any character

From the green human Muscleman, ghostly fork to even the main characters, you want them all in your own posse. They are mental, funny and incorporate all the aspects of each of us in them (surprisingly I know!).

The reminiscing of the 80’s is rife

The creator J.G Quintel has made it clear he loves bringing back 80’s technology in Regular
Show. From Rigby and Mordecai listening this_is_my_jam_1_2479-1to cassettes to to pay phones and VHS players. It gives us oldies a taste of nostalgia and makes kids go “What’s a cassette? All things which inevitably will be part of the mass revival of things a time past. I can certainly see myself dusting of the old VHS player and winding up so classic  Disney videos.

The music is just perfection

The selection of classic tunes in this is undeniably brilliant. From Ballroom Blitz by  Sweet to Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds, it’s a list of tracks even your parents would be proud of. Again this ties brilliantly with the 80 inspiration throughout. A flashback perfection.

Even the movie wasn’t a total disaster

Now when TV shows do movies, they don’t tend to work too well. Fear not! The Regular Show actually didn’t do too shabby with theirs. Rigby and Mordecai must stop an evil lord from destroying the universe and end up in a cluster of obscure situations, which provides for a good hour of laughs.

download-4The positive messages this show gives

Yes it’s bloody madness but this kids programme does give out some pretty positive messages. Always be yourself, have trust in your friends and always have a good time. Granted it is through their own crazy way,but the messages are still there. Now, who said TV wasn’t educational?

It’s won a freaking Emmy Award

I mean, anything that has one an award is always worth a watch right?

You can catch Regular Show every day on Cartoon Network though out the afternoon!
